Past President's Thoughts
By Gilbert Gonzalez

Great news, everyone!

The February/March 2010 edition of the ActiveVOICE contained my Past President's Thoughts article. In that article, I used the heading "Encourage standards setting/certification." I then proceeded to describe the reasons why we need certification, what certification would accomplish, and how we could make our skills valuable and valid.

I am pleased to share the following news with you. On April 30, at the STC Summit, the STC Board of Directors accepted the business case presented by the Certification Task Force. The STC Board of Directors then proceeded to establish a Certification Committee to establish the program. Steven Jong, who headed the Certification Task Force, is the chair of this new committee.

By elevating this activity from a task force activity to a board-level activity, the STC Board of Directors has acknowledged the importance of certification. Certification of technical writers will benefit the profession, its practitioners, and the society itself.

Steven Jong will need volunteers to help work on implementing this certification program. If you are interested in helping, please send Steven an email: SteveFJong@comcast.net. Let's all pitch in to make this dream a reality.

I look forward to working with some of you on this committee.

Gilbert Gonzalez
