Newsletter of the Society for Technical Communication, San Francisco Chapter February/March 2010 |
It’s the time of the year for making (or remaking) new year resolutions. And I hope that you make the Chapter’s monthly meetings a part of your resolution for 2010. With thought-provoking topics and great networking opportunities, the meetings are a great way to jump start your professional development.
For our part, the Chapter's leadership team resolves to make 2010 a great year to continue or to start coming to the meetings. And we’re off to a great beginning. We had tremendous attendance at the first meeting of the year: Andrew Davis' talk on the future for technical communicators.
You can read a full review of Andrew’s talk in this issue’s newsletter, but my takeaway from the meeting was that even in a down job market, technical communicators can succeed. Yes, it will not be easy. But one of the best skill sets of technical communicators is also the best defense against an uncertain future: the ability to change and to adapt to new directions in the workplace.
One way that technical communicators are adapting to the changing communication landscape is to learn more about new ways of communicating messages to their audience. To help our community in this mission, the next topic for our monthly meeting in February will be elearning 2.0. Speaker Clark Quinn will be discussing the formal and informal learning roles behind social networking such as blogs, wikis and discussion forums. A topic sure to incite a tweet or two.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge the hard work and great enthusiasm of the Chapter’s elected officials and volunteers who make up the core leadership committee. It is their dedication that makes each meeting possible. Thanks to all!
